How AI search is changing SEO in 2026, and what to fix first.

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews now answer questions before a visitor ever clicks a result. Here is what actually changes for SEO in 2026, and the fixes worth prioritising first.

For twenty years, SEO meant earning a click. Increasingly, it means earning a citation inside an answer the visitor never leaves the search engine to read. Both still matter, but they reward slightly different things, and treating them as the same problem is how sites lose visibility without understanding why.

What AI search actually rewards

  • Clear, structured, directly-stated answers near the top of a page - AI systems extract answers, they do not read for tone
  • Genuine expertise signals: named authors, real credentials, a track record the model can corroborate elsewhere
  • Structured data - FAQ, HowTo, Product and Organization schema - that makes a page machine-readable, not just human-readable
  • Being mentioned consistently across the web, not just linked to. Citations build trust signals language models pick up on

What has not changed

Technical fundamentals still decide whether any of this matters: crawlability, page speed, a logical site structure, and content that actually answers the question in the title. AI search has not replaced classic SEO - it has added a second audience reading the same page.

What to fix first

Start with the pages that already rank reasonably well and rewrite the top of each one to answer the core question in the first two sentences, before the context and caveats. Add FAQ schema to pages that already read like a Q&A. Then look at your digital growth reporting for pages losing clicks despite stable rankings - that gap is usually AI Overviews answering the query before anyone reaches your site.

“You cannot control whether an AI system quotes you. You can control whether what it would quote is accurate, structured, and actually yours.”

If your organic traffic looks flat while rankings look fine, that mismatch is worth investigating properly rather than guessing at. Talk to us about what an audit would look like for your site.
